Geraldine (O’Brien) Popish, age 79, a Scranton native and longtime Sturges resident, passed away on Saturday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, after a recent illness. She is survived by the love of her life, best friend and beloved husband, Joseph Popish. Wed on November 11, 1967, the couple celebrated 55 years of marriage.
Born on October 22, 1943, Geraldine was the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary (McDowell) O’Brien. A graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School, she was a loyal employee of the former Marian Convent in Scranton where she proudly worked alongside the Sisters of I.H.M. for over 25 years prior to her retirement.
The kindest person anyone could ever meet, Geraldine was loving, humble and always looking to have a good time. She didn’t have an ounce of negativity in her body as she was always upbeat and perpetually positive.
She was a tremendous swimmer, having swam at Weston Fieldhouse for decades and well into her 70’s. She enjoyed traveling, especially with her husband, to anywhere and everywhere. She was, above all else, a devoted Roman Catholic who was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Peckville. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Along with her husband Joseph, she is also survived by her daughter, Christine Popish and Sera Downing of Palmyra, VA; her granddaughter, Alora Mae Popish of Jefferson, N.C.; her daughter-in-law, Lisa Popish of Fayetteville, N.C.; her sister-in-law, Leona Kane and husband Jude of Scranton; and loving and caring nieces and nephews.
On April 4, 2014, she was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Mark Joseph Popish; she was also preceded in death by her aunt and uncle who helped to raise her, William and Helen (O’Brien) Carroll; her adored sisters, Joan Lowry and husband David and Marilyn Serafini and husband Ralph; her loving aunt, Mae O’Brien; and her dear friends, Nancy and Clark Campbell.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, 1101 Willow Street in Peckville, to be celebrated by Rev. Andrew Kurovsky, Pastor. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Wednesday between 9:30 – 10:30 AM. Those wishing to attend the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main ave., Scranton.
