James (Jim) Stabryla, of West Scranton, passed away Thursday evening at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, after an illness. He was 61 years young. Surviving are the loves of his life, his wife of 23 years, Lori (Chmielewski) Stabryla; and his adored daughter, Ava Stabryla.
Born in Dushore on Oct. 9, 1961, and son of the late Frank J. Sr. and Ann Marie (Coyle) Stabryla, Jim was a graduate of Sullivan Area High School. After receiving a degree from the University of Scranton, Jim began his career in human services with OneSource Staffing in Scranton. He next worked at the Lackawanna County Office of Youth and Family Services before becoming a case manager for the Lackawanna County Assistance Office where he had worked until his November illness.
Warm, kind and certainly funny, he possessed an amazing sarcastic humor. Jim loved the outdoors, especially relaxing on his porch with his father-in-law, and he always loved some good classic music. A lifelong animal lover, Jim is also survived by his five pups. He enjoyed his sports and was a die hard fan of both the New York Yankees and New York Jets. Above all else, he loved his family and friends who will never forget him.
Along with his beloved wife and daughter, he is also survived by his six siblings, Frank Stabryla and wife, Brenda, of Mildred; Robert Stabryla, of Shavertown; Joseph Stabryla, of Dushore; and William Stabryla and wife, Stacy, of Hillsgrove; Mary Girton, of Lewisburg; and Lori Scampone, of Montgomery; his father-in-law, Stanley Chmielewski, of Scranton; his sister-in-law, Meghan Chmielewski, of Scranton; and nieces and nephews.
His family would like to thank the entire nursing staff of Geisinger CMC for the tremendous kindness and compassion shown to Jim throughout his stay.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Ann’s Basilica, West Scranton. Private burial, Cathedral Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the church Tuesday from 10 a.m. until Mass.
