Janet Niemiec, a lifelong resident of Old Forge, passed away peacefully on Friday. She was 96 years young.
Born in Old Forge on January 26, 1927, and daughter of the late Andrew and Julia (Tellish) Niemiec, Janet was a graduate of Old Forge High School. A talented seamstress with a tireless work ethic, she worked for over 40 years in the local garment industry, with many of those years spent at Brooks Manufacturing in Old Forge. She was also a faithful Roman Catholic who was a lifelong member of the former St. Michael’s Church in Old Forge prior to its closure before becoming a member of Prince of Peace Parish.
Janet certainly lived a full life. After retirement, she traveled extensively with her family, especially her beloved sister and best friend, Mary, and close friends, sharing many great adventures in Hawaii, Alaska, and several cruises to Panama and Costa Rica, just to name a few.
A brilliant artist and seamstress, Janet was also known for her incredible memory and independence. She was a kind soul and devoted caregiver throughout her life, taking care of her mother, her sister, and helping to raise her niece, Lorraine.
Janet was recently asked about the secret to a long life. Her answer: “hard work and goodies (desserts).” She will forever be missed by family and friends.
She is survived by her cousin who provided his loving care, Dr. Joseph Tellish and wife Patricia of Jermyn; nieces and nephews, Lorraine Ross of Franklin, NC, Suzanne Way of Carbondale, CO, Judy Naughton, Thomas and Joseph Niemiec, all of Scranton; and many great nieces, great nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.
The last of the Niemiec family, Janet was preceded in death by her three siblings, Mary Carey, Chester and Joseph Niemiec, and a niece Mary Ellen.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of Compassionate Care Hospice as well as Janet’s wonderful neighbors, Valerie and Bob, who became extended family.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Wednesday at 11:15 AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a noon Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish in Old Forge, to be celebrated Rev. August Ricciardi, Pastor. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Janet’s name to the donor’s favorite charity.
