Sandra (Gething) Battenberg, age 78 and a lifelong Scranton resident, passed away Tuesday at home surrounded by her adoring family after an illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Armine “Duane” Battenberg, on January 7, 2001.
Born on September 9, 1944, raised in Scranton, and daughter of the Edward H. and Elizabeth (Parry) Gething, Sandra was a graduate of West Scranton High School. Upon marriage, she raised her loving family of five children. Her family meant everything to her.
Sandra will forever be remembered for countless things. She loved reading her mystery novels and, with her family sitting alongside her, she was a couch fixture every evening for the Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! combo. Always on the go, she kept the cleanest house around, and a dog lover, she adored her “Precious.”
To know Sandra was to love her. She’ll be dearly missed by her family and friends.
She possessed an amazing personality, was physically/spiritually/ and emotionally strong and a truly Beautiful woman, friend, daughter and mother, who did all she could within her means to raise her children right and give them all she could.
She’ll be remembered as much perfect as one can be. She is survived by her loving family, including three children, Kimberly Stout and husband Donald of Thornhurst, caregiver Tracy Powell of Scranton and William Battenberg and wife Kristy of Scranton; ten grandchildren, Donald and Cory Stout, Brian and April Powell, Cierra Fox, Charissa, Ashton and Haylee Battenberg, Brittany and Katlynn Battenberg; five great grandchildren; three siblings, William Gething and wife Mary Ann and Robert Gething, all of Scranton; and many nieces and nephews.
Two sons, Edward “Eddie” Battenberg and Armine “Duane” Battenberg; and siblings, Edward Gething and Margaret Spadler, also preceded her in death.
A celebration of Sandra’s Life is scheduled for Saturday between 10 – 12:00 PM at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with blessing services at noon. Please visit the funeral home’s website for directions or to leave a condolence.
