Rose Marie (Decantis) Egan, age 91, of the Tripps Park section of West Scranton, passed away Tuesday morning at Allied Hospice in Scranton. She married the love of her life, Donald “Ike” G. Egan in 1955, and upon his death on November 5th, the couple celebrated 67 years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of Scranton, Rose Marie was born on October 25, 1931, to the late Dominick and Antoinette (Carlucci) Decantis. Graduating alongside Ike in West Scranton High School’s Class of 1949, she went on to work split shifts as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone for 32 years, all the while raising her four children. Her children always came first and her priority was ensuring that they had all they ever needed: goal accomplished.
Her work ethic was admirable, as was her Italian cooking. Upon her retirement, she and Ike became frequest travelers. Together the couple traveled the globe, having taken 15 cruises throughout their journies.
Despite the difficult loss, comfort is found knowing that she’s now reunited with Ike forever. Also of Roman Catholic faith, she was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Church Parish.
She is also survived by her adoring family including her children, Donald G. Egan Jr. and wife, Nuzhat, of Virginia; Timothy Egan and wife, Julie, of Lake Ariel; Sharon Kirby and husband, Jack, of Clarks
Summit; and Jo Ann Van Fleet, of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Patrick, Sabrina, Genevieve, Shannon, Kerry, Christopher and William; siblings Emil “Moe” Decantis of Scranton and Virginia Ward of FL; and many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her grandson, Kelly Egan Mullen; and siblings, Dominick Decantis, Jr., Philip Decantis and Florence Cianfichi.
Her family would like to thank the both the entire staff of Allied Hospice for taking such great care of Rose Marie in her final days.
