John “Smiley” Morrison, age 68, a lifelong West Scranton resident, passed away Wednesday at Regional Hospital of Scranton following a recent illness. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Susan (Rowlands) Morrison. The couple married on October 19, 1991, recently celebrating their 31st anniversary.
Born in Scranton on June 24, 1954 and son of the late Michael and Elizabeth Ann (Lynott) Morrison, John was a 1974 graduate of West Scranton High School. He currently worked as a machinist for Arlington Industries where he had been employed for over 20 years.
A black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu, it was in his training he met Sue. Very dedicated to the sport, he had competed in numerous tournaments, member of the demonstration team and even served as a Kung Fu instructor.
John was quiet, laid back and always wearing a smile. Those traits led to him being known as “Mr. Chill” by his neighbors. He enjoyed sitting by his fire pit, spending time with family and friends and watching sports (rooting for the N.Y. Yankees, P.S.U. Nittany Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers).
After an unexpected illness and passing, John will never be forgotten by his loved ones.
He is also survived by his beloved sons, Sean, Richard and Rowland Morrison, all of Scranton; his siblings, Michael Morrison, Jr., Mary Ann Biel and husband Paul and Elizabeth “Betsy” Thomas, all of Scranton, Patricia Savitts and husband Walter of Clarks Summit and Maureen O’Connor and husband Martin of Jessup; and many nieces and nephews.
His brother, Joseph Morrison, also preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst Twp. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until Mass.
Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
In lieu of flowers and with John’s love for his pets (four cats and two dogs), memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter c/o 967 Griffin Pond Rd, South Abington Township, PA 18411.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
