Al Pehanick, 87 of Roaring Brook Twp., passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Friday. He was the beloved husband of his high school sweetheart, best friend and wife of 65 years, Beverly Jean (Long) Pehanick.
Born in Scranton on Aug. 27, 1935, Al was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Krake) Pehanick. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School and attended Seattle University on a basketball scholarship. He also served in the United States Army, prior to his honorable discharge from service.
A tremendous baseball talent, Al was drafted by the Detroit Tigers organization in 1954. He retired after 11 baseball seasons and winter baseball in the Dominican Republic. He was employed by the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company for 30 years, before his retirement.
On Nov. 25, 1988, Al was inducted into Chick Feldman Foundation – Northeast Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, after being recognized for his countless achievements on the baseball diamond.
Al was a devoted Catholic and a faithful member of St. Eulalia’s Church Parish. He was a wonderful husband, proud father, adoring grandfather and great-grandfather who cherished his family. A truly good person, he served as the rock for his family and he will certainly remain both loved and missed.
Al also enjoyed playing golf and watching his children and grandchildren playing sports.
Along with Beverly, he is survived by his loving family, including his four children, Ret. Col. Albert Pehanick and wife Tessa, Karen Pehanick, Lori Sheppard and husband Stewart, and James Pehanick and wife Marci; 11 grandchildren, Ryan, Colin, Logan, Victoria, Olivia, Chloe, Isabelle, Alexander, Zachary, Drew and Klye; four great-grandchildren, Al, Harry, Quinn and Eleanor; and many nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by his siblings, Helen Jurbala, Andrew Pehanick, Gertrude Kollar, Paul Pehanick, Michael Pehanick, Joseph Pehanick and George Pehanick.
Al’s family would like to thank the entire staff of Traditional Home Health Care – Hospice for the excellent care they provided, as well as their kindness and compassion given to both Al and his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Eulalia’s Parish, 214 Blue Shutters Road, Roaring Brook Twp. Burial with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Avenue, Scranton.
