Steven Samitz, age 61, a longtime Old Forge resident, died suddenly on Friday at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Joanne (Thomas) Samitz.
Born on April 29, 1961, and raised in Philadelphia, Steven was the son of the late Charles and Johanna (Stratchko) Samitz. He was a graduate of Mercy Career & Technical Catholic High School in Philadelphia before moving to the area. He worked in construction for Protection Services before currently working in the distribution department for Benco Dental for the past seven years.
A lifelong sports fan, he was perhaps the Philadelphia Eagles’ #1 fan. A dog lover, he adored watching the pups: “Toby,” “Sammy” and “Presley.”
He had an amazing personality, making it easy for him to fit in with anyone. He also had a memorable dry humor, always able to slide a joke into the conversation. Above all else, it was either Steven’s way or Steven’s way.
A loving husband, Dad, uncle and cousin, he will never be forgotten.
He is also survived by his sons, Adam Samitz and Tyler Cavalari, both of Old Forge; a father-in-law, Reese Thomas Sr., of Moosic; nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of Steven’s life will be on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Please visit the funeral home’s website for directions or to leave a condolence.
