Elaine (Moore) Morrison of Citra, Florida, passed away on Saturday, June 18th, at University of Florida – Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville. She was 83 years young.
Born in Nanticoke on January 22, 1939, Elaine was the daughter of the late Edgar and Agnes Sorber, Hunlock Creek natives. A graduate of Northwest Area High School, Class of 1957, she was both a majorette and a member of the school’s drama club.
While in high school, she began dating Ellsworth “Butch” Moore. While serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed in Norfolk, Va., Butch would hitchhike home to visit Elaine while on his leave. After Butch’s service duty, he and Elaine would marry and begin a family. They settled in Plymouth where they lived for forty years. They spent their summers at their cottage on North Lake, where they hosted many picnics and family get-togethers. After raising her children and becoming a grandmother, which was a tremendous source of joy for her, she decided to begin her second act in life by doing something she always enjoyed; swimming. Elaine was employed by the Wilkes Barre YMCA, first as a swimming instructor, then as the center’s aquatics director for ten years.
After Butch’s passing in 1996, she and her mother retired to Clearwater, Fl. They enjoyed many years together spent golfing, bowling and being with friends.
It was in Clearwater that she met and ultimately married James Morrison in 2014. Together they enjoyed traveling around Florida in their camper with their beloved dogs, Molly and Charlie.
She is survived by her husband; James Morrison of Citra, Fl., her children; Douglas Moore and wife Joann of Shavertown and Kimberly Moore of Kingston, grandchildren; Brianna Keeler and husband Sean of Swoyersville, Daniel Veshinski and wife Becky Lowndes of San Diego, Ca., Kelsey Dolhon of New York, NY. and Giles Moore and partner Cecelia Pokrifka of Wilkes Barre, a great-granddaughter; Ava Moore of Wilkes Barre and numerous cousins.
Arrangements for a private blessing with burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery will be under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main Street in Old Forge. Please visit the funeral home’s website to leave a condolence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Elaine’s name to the donor’s favorite charity.
