Duane R. Young, Jr. (Sonny), age 75 , of Scranton, and the Patriarch of the Young family, passed away at home on Sunday, June 19th, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Carol A. (Royce) Young. The couple would have celebrated a 52nd wedding anniversary on September 17th.
Born in Wyalusing on November 20th, 1946, Sonny was the son of the late Mary Jane Bennett and Duane R. Young, Sr. He was a graduate of Wyalusing High School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army. Stationed in Okinawa, Japan.
He was retired but prior to his long-deserved retirement, he was employed by Schiff’s in Scranton. He was a man with many trades and many skills throughout his career.
Some of Sonny’s favorite hobbies included fishing at various lakes, family picnics, playing guitar, singing (especially to karaoke at home) but above all else, his favorite hobby was spending time with his family.
His door was always open to family and friends as he and Carol welcomed all who entered.
He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor and his favorite time of year was the Christmas season where he certainly went all out with his holiday decorations.
He adored his cats, Spunky and Wilbur, and he will long be remembered as encouraging, an instructor and a leader who was confident, talented, yet so silly and playful. Adored by all who knew him, he’ll be forever missed.
He is survived by his children, Robert E. Williams of Scranton, Tracy L. Cipriano and husband Joseph of Dickson City, Richard D. Williams and wife Christine of Moscow, Edith M. Anders and husband Richard of Dickson City, Kelly A. Young and fiancee Paul Carite of Scranton and Duane R. Young, III and wife Kelley of Old Forge; his siblings, John Young and wife Jill, Stanley Young and wife Sue, Thomas Young and Timothy Young, Deborah Young and Eugene Young; a sister-in-law, Janet Young; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Morgan; brothers, Clifford R. Young, Sr. and Burton Young; and a daughter-in-law, Adelaide Williams.
His family would like to express its gratitude to the nurses at Comprehensive Home Health, VA Medical Center, Dr. Balas and his nurses, Sandy and Lee, Dr Moy, VNA Hospice and Dr. Diakiw for the wonderful care given.
