Robert (Bob) Wilbur, age 83, of Dupont, passed away Saturday evening at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, after a recent illness. On July 31, 2019, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Ann Marie (Church) Wilbur.
Born on December 7, 1938, and raised in Dupont, Bob was the son of the late Herman and Edna (Jumper) Wilbur. In his youth, he moved to New Jersey where he completed mechanical trade school before owning and operating Gary’s Gas and Service Station in Elizabeth, N.J.
Upon its closure, he worked for many years as an armored guard for United Armored Services, prior to his retirement and return to Dupont.
He possessed a relentless work ethic, and even after retirement he worked as a custodian for the Pittston Area School District until only several weeks ago.
He was kind, gentle and a peaceful man who adored his family. A talented mechanic, he was a classic car collector and a fixture at car shows where he had won countless awards. His strength is what he’ll long be remembered for, evident by “his final ride” (driving his classic truck to a show only three weeks ago). Now at peace and reunited with Ann Marie, he’ll forever be missed.
He is survived by his adoring family including three daughters, Barbara Tyner and husband Brian of Carthage, North Carolina, Donna Cobb and husband Thomas of Toms River, New Jersey and Dora Ewan and husband Brian, Sr. of Barnegat, New Jersey; grandchildren, William and Bryan Bartlett, Courtney Tyner, Thomas, Jonathan, Christina and Matthew Cobb, Nicole and Brian Ewan, Jr.; great grandchildren, Jayden, Rhyden and Caiden; and nieces and nephews.
The last of three Wilbur brothers, he was preceded in death by Herman and Ronald Wilbur.
His family would like to acknowledge and thank the entire staff of both Sacred Heart Hospice and Allied Skilled Nursing for their care and compassion when counted upon most.
A celebration of Bob’s life is scheduled for Thursday 2 – 4:00 PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with Rev. Dr. Michael Shambora’s blessing service set for 3:30 PM. Private burial, Langcliffe Cemetery in Avoca.
