Calvin Friday, Sr., 77, a longtime resident of Scranton, died Sunday morning at the Inpatient Unit of Hospice of the Sacred Heart.

Born June 20, 1944 in Timmonsville, SC, son of the late Charlie and Marylee Brown Friday, Calvin was one of twelve children. In his early 20’s, he left South Carolina and became a Groomsman for race horses for more than 20 years and prior to his retirement, he was a dedicated driver for the Friends of the Poor also for more than 20 years.

A loving father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, Calvin’s life was his family. He loved Sunday and holiday dinners with his family, and especially spending time with his kids and grandkids. Whether working on Amanda’s car, fishing with CJ, or just enjoying the fresh air outdoors watching the grandkids on the trampoline, he loved making his family happy. Calvin enjoyed music, especially Otis Redding, James Reed, Sam Cooke, and the like. His love for life and generous spirit will be remembered for years to come.

Surviving are his children, Calvin “CJ” Friday, Jr., Albion, PA; Amanda Friday, who was also his caretaker, and companion, Matt Olmedo, Scranton; Karla Friday, and husband, Earl Weldon, and Mary Friday, all of Wilkes-Barre; Grandchildren, Tyrick, whom he raised, Aniylah, Lillianna, Alexis, Darious, and Shaiheem; sisters, Mary Alice Dixon and Jeanette Friday (Mark) Burroughs, Timmonsville, SC, Jean Taylor and CharlenaFriday of Effingham, SC; brothers, Rev. Charles (Pauline) Friday, Passaic, NJ, Leroy (Lisa) Friday, Coatesville, PA, and Ervin Simon, Timmonsville, SC; Sister-in-law, LillieBertha Friday Smith; 23 Nieces, 12 nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

His lifelong best friend and mother of his children, Rita Sharon Nemeth; sister and brother-in-law, Daisy Friday (Julious) Best; and brothers, Curtis, Alphonso, Nathaniel, and Anthony, and brother-in-law, Henry Dixon preceded him in death.

A Celebration of Calvin’s Life will be held on Friday at 7 PM in the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc.., 125 N. Main Avenue, Scranton, with his brother, Rev. Charles Friday, officiating.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 5 PM until the time of the service in the funeral home.
