Mary Frances “Fran” (Mangan) Galat, age 89, a lifelong resident of West Scranton, passed away Thursday evening at Regional Hospital of Scranton, after an illness. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Charles J. Galat, Sr., on August 5, 2012.
Born on September 25, 1932 and daughter of the late Francis “Frank” and Helen (English) Mangan, Fran was a graduate of the former St. Patrick’s High School where she also met her husband. She later worked for USF&G Insurance Co.
Fran was an avid reader and always enjoyed her word puzzle games. Above all else came her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandson. Kind, humble and selfless, she always put the needs of others before her own. Certainly now at peace, she’ll never be forgotten.
She is survived by her loving family, three children Charles James Galat, Jr. of S. Abington Twp. and companion Dana Petrunich, Mary Fran Galat and Milissa Carey, both of Clarks Summit; a daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Galat of Falls Twp.; three grandchildren, Yulia Galat of Aurora, CO., William Charles Carey, PFC USMC of Camp Johnson, NC., and Nicholas Dimitri Carey of Clarks Summit; and a great grandson, Kristopher Galat of Falls Twp.
Fran’s family wishes to thank the entire staff of Carbondale Nursing Center whose staff treated Fran as if she was a member of their own family.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1608 Oram Street, Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.
Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects on Wednesday between 10 – 11:00 AM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Fran’s name to St. Patrick’s Church Food Pantry c/o 1401 Jackson St., Scranton, Pa. 18504.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Please visit the funeral home’s website for directions or to leave a condolence.
