Jane E. McGowty, of West Scranton and Lake Winola and former Chair of the Marywood University Music Department, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening. She was 96 years old.
Born in Scranton and daughter of the late Dr. William H. and Nora (Fahey) McGowty, Jane was a graduate of the former Scranton Central High School. She earned a Bachelor of Music Degree from Marywood College before obtaining a Master of Arts Degree from the New York University.
Jane was a respected longstanding member of the faculty at Marywood University. Under her tenure as Music Department Chair, she was instrumental in the development of the Junior High Honor Band Program and also oversaw the creation of the Music Therapy Program. An accomplished pianist, Jane touched the lives of countless students who learned piano under her tutelage.
Also active in the community, she was a member of both the Scranton Singer’s Guild and the Scranton Historical Society. Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a devoted member of St. Patrick’s Church Parish in West Scranton as well as its Society of the Faithful.
Intelligent, insightful and possessing an unforgettable Irish wit, as Jane’s health declined she personified perseverance and displayed an indomitable spirit. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her family and dear friends, including, John McDonnell, Jane Langan, Michael, Kevin, Raymond and Brian Bosworth, Ann Smalser and James Marcks and wife Janice, and her longtime friends on Schlager Street.
Her loved ones would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Jane’s devoted caregivers, Caroline, Kathy, Terri, Kathleen, Nancy and Gwen for their collective kindness, care and compassion.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1605 Oram Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until Mass time. Masks are requested to be worn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jane’s name to either the Sisters of I.H.M. c/o 2300 Adams Ave, Scranton, PA 18509 or to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart c/o 600 Baltimore Dr # 7, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
