Helen Linda (Dowse) Butler, age 74 and a longtime West Scranton resident, passed away Sunday evening at Regional Hospital of Scranton, after an illness.
Born on August 8, 1947, a descendant of the Hefferon/Prendergast family of Old Forge and the Dowse /Lander family of Taylor, she was a proud graduate of the former Saint Patrick’s High School, Class of 1965. She briefly worked at The Pentagon for the U.S. Department of Defense before migrating back to her hometown and raising three children of whom she was so proud.
A lifelong Bee gees fan, writing poetry was more to her than just a hobby. Some of her poetry included “My Kathy Girl”, The Man in the Old Grey Cap”, ” I am Scranton”, and “She Speaks” (Our Country’s Flag). She also wrote a short story titled “My Son, the boy, the man, the ‘Marine’ ”.
Also, photography was a passion as she loved to take photos of Scranton and with these photos a poster was born in 2010. She also developed a photo of pure creation with its title being “In Every Window, Our country’s flag.” Writing also came easy to her. “A Christmas Story” was published in the Scranton Time-Tribune along with several other of her works. She was a creative artist in so many ways.
Scranton’s “West Side” was always a large part of her life – “Once a West Sider, always a West Sider.” She moved to Washington West High Rise in 2005 where she formed a number of meaningful and treasured friendships.
She loved life and lived it while always being on the go. She possessed an engaging and friendly personality, making it easy for her to make countless friends along the way. She was strong-willed and a loyal patriot who was long proud to be a Scrantonian. A loving mother and grandmother, she will never be forgotten by her family and friends.
Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Parish in West Scranton.
She is survived by her loving family, children, Mst. Sgt. Sean Sargeant, USMC, and wife Dolores of Murrieta, CA, Kathleen Williams and husband James of Scranton and Matthew Jude Butler and wife Maureen of Wall, N.J.; six grandchildren, Sean Sargeant, James, Sarah, Matthew “The Dude” and Elijah Williams and Scarlett Butler; siblings, Robert Dowse of Taylor and Sally Marley of VA; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hawley Thomas and Helen (Hefferon) Dowse; an infant son, David Butler; her sister, Mary Cmur; and her dear friend, Patricia Walsh Williams.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church.
Arrangements are under the care of the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.
