Kathryn (Toraldo) McKenna, 74, of Jefferson Twp., passed away Monday at Allied Hospice in Scranton after a recent illness and shortly after the death of her brother, Dominic Toraldo Jr. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip E. McKenna, Jr., on May 9, 1993.
Born on Oct. 25, 1947, and raised in the Plot section of North Scranton, Kathryn was the daughter of the late Dominic Sr. and Anne (Gaffney) Toraldo and a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School. She moved to New Jersey in the 1970s as her husband was stationed at Fort Dix Military Base before settling in Elizabeth, N.J. Upon his passing, she moved home to settle in Jefferson Twp., where she worked as a secretary for the former Lackawanna County Commissioner Joseph Corcoran. She would retire from the Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.
Kathryn was fierce and feisty yet the first one to defend and protect those she loved. She was loyal, loving and caring of her family and friends. Her favorite pastime was gardening yet she loved nothing more than spending time with Kathryn’s little “angel,” her granddaughter, Jordyn. She will certainly be missed.
She is survived by her loving family: her son, Philip McKenna of Woodbridge, N.J.; her granddaughter, Jordyn McKenna; her longtime companion, Phil Fuller of Jefferson Twp.; her brother, Paul Toraldo and wife, Mary (Pullo) Toraldo of Hanover, Md.; sisters-in-law, Patricia (Chelland) Toraldo and Judy Toraldo; a brother-in-law, Michael Maguire; and many nieces and nephews.
Kathryn was also preceded in death by seven siblings, Alice Marie Maguire, Mary Louise Logan, Gaetano Toraldo, Gerard Toraldo, infants Bernard and Ann Toraldo and, also on Monday morning, Dominic Toraldo Jr.; and her stepmother, Ann (Walsh) Toraldo.
Joint funeral services are scheduled for both Kathryn and Dominic on Monday at 11 a.m. in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 517 N. Main St., Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. Martin Gaiardo. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton. Family and friends may pay their respects Sunday between 3 and 7 p.m. at the funeral home. As per the family’s wishes, masks are to be worn at the funeral home.
With Kathryn’s family’s deepest appreciation for their amazing inpatient care, all memorial contributions are asked to be made to the Allied Services Hospice Center, 100 Abington Executive Park, Clarks Summit, PA. 18411.
