Mildred A. Norton, West Scranton, died Thursday evening, July 22, 2021, at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania after an illness.
A lifelong resident of Scranton, daughter of the late Thomas and Helen Walsh Norton, Mildred was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Marywood College, class of 1945. She received her Masters of Science degree in library science in 1952.
Mildred began her career as a librarian at the University of Scranton in 1946. She continued as acquisitions librarian from 1946 until her retirement in 1988. In 1966, she was named to the Order Pro Deo et Universitate for her twenty years of service to the University. Throughout her forty-two year career at the University, she served on numerous committees and contributed much to the Ignatian vision of Christian education for young men and women.
Mildred was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Scranton, and its choir when her sister Marilyn was director. She was a member of the Society of the Faithful. She was also a member of the Marywood University Alumni Association.
Surviving is a niece, Jane E. McLane and husband attorney John, Scranton; three nephews, Thomas J. Earley and wife, Barbara, Dunmore; James B. Earley, Scranton; and attorney John A. Earley and wife, Lynne, Clarks Green; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by four sisters; Margaret in 1966, Mary Elizabeth Earley in 1996, Marilyn in 2010, and Sister M. Immaculata, IHM (Martha) in 2019.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 26, at 11:00 a.m. in Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1605 Oram St, West Scranton. Interment will follow in the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the Chapel prior to the Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton, PA 18504, or the IHM Retirement Fund, IHM Center, 2300 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA.
