Martin (Marty) J. Orr, age 69, of La Plume and formerly of Scranton, passed away Thursday at Regional Hospital after an illness. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Todd) Orr. The couple celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on April 25th.
Born on April 7, 1952 and raised in Scranton, Marty was the son of the late Martin, Sr. and Ruth (Arnold) Orr. Educated at the former Scranton Technical High School, Marty led the maintenance team at the Clarks Summit State Hospital for many years prior to his retirement. Upon retirement, he became a familiar face at the Clarks Summit Sheetz as its lead custodian.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, he was honorably discharged after 20 years of service to our country while earning rank of sergeant.
A devoted and faithful Roman Catholic, Marty was a longtime member of Our Lady of the Snows in Clarks Summit. His kind and selfless nature is the legacy he’s passed onto his children. He’d give the shirt off of his back to anyone in need, even a stranger. His humor was unforgettable and he had an uncanny knack of making those around him laugh – wherever and whenever. He was truly the life of the party.
He was a die-hard Elvis Presley fan, loved a good casino slot machine and was a longtime bowler in several local leagues. Also a dog lover, he certainly adored his pup Charlie.
Loved by all who knew him, Marty will forever be missed.
He is also survived by his children, Theresa L. Orr and Eric of Scranton, Marty J. Orr and Elizabeth of Scranton, Sueann Dawn Phillips and Kenneth of Scranton, Anthony Orr of Scranton, Evan Orr (daughter and caregiver) of La Plume and Robert Orr of La Plume; two step sons, Michael Hricenak of Tenn. and Joseph Hricenak of La Plume; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; siblings, John Orr and Judy, Paul Orr and Theresa Ann and Margaret (Peggy) Otto, all of Scranton, and Thomas Orr of Fl.; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Marty’s life is scheduled for Monday at 7:00 PM at the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard to follow.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 4:00 PM until services at the funeral home. Details for a memorial mass will be announced.
