Alma M. (Giacometti) Zukauskas, age 98 and a lifelong resident of Old Forge, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at home. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Vincent Michael Zukauskas, on June 7, 2012.
Born on February 26, 1923, and raised in Old Forge, Alma was the daughter of the late Adolfo and Luisa (Allegrucci) Giacometti. A graduate of Old Forge High School, she worked as a bookkeeper for Dutchess Co., Old Forge, before carrying on the business of her father’s butcher shop, the former Giacometti’s Grocery Store, which specialized in homemade Italian sausage. Her talents as a cook will never be forgotten and neither will her memory.
She is survived by her four children, Louise Leoniak and husband Fred of Naples, Florida, her caregiver for nearly a decade, Robert Zukauskas, with whom she resided; Joseph Zukauskas and wife Joy of Center Valley and Vincent Zukauskas and wife Helen of Schickshinny; her five grandchildren, Christopher, Stephen, Paul, Aimee and Sarah; a great granddaughter, Amelia; sisters, Verna Stefanowich of CA and Lorraine Braunlich and husband Ralph of FL; and many nieces and nephews.
A grandson, David Zukauskas; and a sister, Nora Morgan, also preceded her in death.
A private blessing service by Rev. August A. Ricciardi, Prince of Peace Parish Pastor, will be from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with burial to follow at Marcy Cemetery in Duryea.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Alma’s name to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45250-0301, Attn: Gift Processing.
