Joan Morelli (88), formerly of West Scranton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 19th at St. Martha’s Center in Downingtown, PA after an illness. She was the wife of Anthony Morelli, formerly of Dunmore, who preceded her in death in 2007.

Born on August 11th 1932 to George Battle and Josephine Ferrick, Joan was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1950, and went on to earn her LPN from St. Mary’s (Keller Memorial) Hospital School for Nursing in South Scranton.

Following the untimely passing of her mother, Joan was called upon to assume the responsibility of helping to care for her father and siblings at a young age. It was during this time she developed the deep spirituality and devotion to family that guided her throughout her life.

In 1956, Joan and Anthony were married. Their focus was to make a better life for their children. Joan’s commitment to raising her family was unrivaled. She kept her home spotless, her kitchen warm and her heart open. Her annual Christmas wish, “for my kids to be happy”, always came true. She loved nothing more than gathering together with family and friends to spend time, play games, laugh, sing, tell jokes and watch her family grow.

Joan is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Kathleen Figured, brothers, Robert, Frank, twin brother Gene and sister Alora Reed.

She is survived by her brother James; Her sons: George (and wife, JoAnne), Anthony (and wife, Laura), Joseph (and wife, Rose), daughter Ann Marie Mazzarella (and husband, Nicholas) and son-in-law Jack Figured; Her 8 grandchildren: Matthew and Michael Figured, Jessica Mahoney, Catherine Conaway, Mary Kathleen Morelli, Emily Hernandez, Michael and Patrick Morelli, five great grandchildren Anthony and John Figured, Siena Hernandez, Michael Mahoney, Baylor Conaway and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 9:15 AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson St. Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor.
