Evelyn (Gula) Battle of West Scranton passed away peacefully Thursday evening at home with her loving son by her side. She was 87 years old. She was preceded in death on December 28, 2003, by her beloved husband of 45 years, Gene Battle.
Born in Scranton on October 17, 1932, and daughter of the late Michael and Anna Ignatz Gula, Evelyn was educated in Scranton Schools.
Prior to her retirement, she had worked for Gress Farms before Gertrude Hawks.
Evelyn loved playing cards and scratch-off lotto tickets and she’d never turn down a good game of BINGO with her friends. Also a great cook, she was known for never letting anyone leave her house hungry, offering food to everyone.
She had fond memories of her time spent camping and enjoying the outdoors at Lake Moc-A-Tek, she always loved traveling, but above all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She certainly loved being a grandma.
Passing away peacefully on Thursday evening, she will never be forgotten.
Of Roman Catholic faith, she was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Parish in West Scranton.
She is survived by her adoring son and caregiver, George Battle of Scranton; her sister, Irene Mustage and husband Gene of Avoca; her grandchildren, Cpl. George Battle, Jr., U.S.M.C., Meghan and Alyssa McHugh; great grandchildren, Isabella, Emilia, Lilah and Mason; and in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Maureen McHugh.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of both LIFE Geisinger and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the amazing care given to Evelyn throughout the past year.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 9:15AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox.
