Valerie (Jones) Leader, age 85 of Scott Twp., passed away Tuesday evening, August 25th, after a lengthy period of ill health at Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton.
Born on February 16, 1935, daughter of the late David Rhys Jones and Mabel (Simmons) Jones, Valerie was educated in the Scranton School District and was an honors graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1952, participating in the Library Club & Thespian Society.
Valerie was employed by the former International Salt Company and later by the former Third National Bank. She later retired from the former Old Forge Bank.
An avid reader, she also enjoyed music, theatre, movies, the National Football League and had an affinity to dogs and horses.
Surviving are her children, Bethany Sue Rhodes & husband Stephen of Coon Rapids, MN, and Douglas Robert Leader of Scott Twp.; six grandchildren, David Russell Leader and great granddaughter Adlyn of Scranton, Jacob Douglas Leader of Dalton, Jacob Dillon Bonner and fiancée Samantha of Scott Twp., Stephany Ruth Rhodes Cole and husband Jayme Cole of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sarah Rhys Rhodes of Madison, Wisconsin and Joella Rose Leader of Scott Twp.; and several cousins and friends.
Also preceding her in death was an infant granddaughter, Shanna Marie Leader.
Her family would like to acknowledge and thank the entire staff of Allied Skilled Nursing Center, especially the nurses, aides and hospice care of 2-South. Their collective care will never be forgotten.
A funeral service to be conducted by Rev. Dr. Michael Shambora is scheduled for Saturday, September 12th, at noon in the Thomas P Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 N. Main Street, Old Forge, with burial to follow at Marcy Cemetery in Duryea.
Family and friends may pay their respects September 12th from 10:00AM until services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Valerie’s name to any Animal Shelter of the donors choice.
