Michael J. Lucas, Jr., age 77, a longtime West Scranton resident and recently a guest at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, passed away Friday at Regional Hospital.
Born in Scranton on July 20, 1943, the son of the late Michael J., Sr. and Loretta (Cannon) Lucas, Michael was a graduate of the former St. Patrick’s High School, Class of 1961. A proud U.S. Army Veteran, he was honorably discharged in 1970 after six years of service during the Vietnam War. He was an employee of the United States Postal Service for over 30 years prior to his retirement.
Michael looked forward every year to celebrating Memorial Day with his veteran friends and neighborhood cookout. An antique car enthusiast and a lover of Cadillacs, Michael showed his 1960 white Cadillac convertible at various car shows and served as a Judge as well. He was also an active member of the South Side Bachelors Club. A man of great faith, he was a lifelong member and longtime usher at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Parish in West Scranton.
He is survived by cousins and the many friends who stepped up to help Michael in his time of need during the past year and a half, including longtime neighbor and best friend the late Thomas
Ralston. Also preceding him in death was his sister, Loretta Weis.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday at 10:00AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so from 9:30AM until Mass at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s name to the St. Francis Commons c/o 504 Penn Avenue, Scranton, PA 18509.
