Elaine Ginley Davis, a resident of both West Scranton and Estero, FL, passed away Wednesday evening at home surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Benjamin Davis, on August 30, 2009.
Born on July 31, 1934, and raised in Dunmore, Elaine was the daughter of the late Francis and Irene (Fitzsimmons) Ginley.
A 1952 graduate of Dunmore High School, she loved traveling, tennis, socializing and, above all, her family. As a devoted mom during her children’s formative years, she took great pride in functioning as honorary team captain in her little red Valiant and her dedicated provision of infinite cups of Kool-Aid and homemade chocolate chip cookies, refereeing backyard football, participation in John Marshall #41 School PTA and holding a Cub Scouts Den Mother title. Her smile would always light up a room and when her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were in her company, the sound of her laughter was undeniably infectious as they were the light of her life and her greatest pride. After raising her family, Elaine served as the Director of Admissions for Scranton’s Community Medical Center for 17 years prior to her 1993 retirement.
For anyone who knew Elaine, they knew there was nothing dearer to her heart than her husband, Ben. Not a day went by that you didn’t hear a reference or story about the life they shared. From their infamous standing Saturday night dinner for two to the trips they took traveling the globe, they were inseparable and their love was both everlasting and inspiring.
Her zest for life was contagious as she was always known to enjoy a good cocktail and a plane ticket to anywhere. Following retirement, she cherished her later years spent in Florida where her days and nights were filled with relaxation amongst her Riverwoods friends, including countless hours on the tennis court, playing card games and bingo. To know her was to love her and she loved deeply with her open door policy that applied to family, friends and any unplanned visitor welcomed with open arms.
A devout Roman Catholic, she was a longtime member of St. Patrick’s Parish in West Scranton and Our Lady of Light Catholic Community in Estero, FL.She is survived by her adoring family; children Gerald Davis and wife Michelle of Scranton, Mark Davis and wife Sandy of Scranton and Maureen Suprum and husband Anthony of Parsippany, NJ; grandchildren, Cliff Davis of Conshohocken, Stephanie Davis of Philadelphia, Trisha Kane and husband Joseph of Doylestown and Randy Davis of Brooklyn, NY; two great grandchildren, Payton Davis and Benjamin Kane; a sister-in-law, Rosalie Lasako and husband Harold of Scranton and niece Kerri Lasako of Brooklyn, NY; and nieces and nephews and many dear friends in both Scranton and Florida.
Her brother, Norbert Ginley, also preceded her in death.
Elaine’s family would like to thank the remarkable Hospice of the Sacred Heart staff for their care, compassion and guidance through this difficult time, and also to Elaine’s beloved grandchildren who served as devoted caregivers throughout her illness.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Monday at 11:15AM from the Kevin K. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a noon Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev.
