Frances E. (Kelly) Norton, age 91, of Scranton and a longtime resident of Mine Hill, New Jersey, passed away Tuesday morning at the Holy Family Residence, Scranton, where she resided. Her husband of 63 years, Clarence Norton, preceded her in death on November 26, 2016.
A Scranton native, Frances was born on December 20, 1927 to the late Paul and Mildred Fahey Kelly. A 1945 graduate of the former Scranton Central High School, she had worked in the offices of Capital Records for five years before beginning her family. While raising her five children, Frances became known as the ‘neighborhood mother’ for treating all the neighborhood children as if they were her own. A devoted Roman Catholic, she was a sixty-year member of St. Mary’s Church in Wharton, N.J., and a longtime member of the church’s Rosary Society.
She would read anything and everything, loved baking and was a great cook. Certainly to be forever missed, she is now at peace.
She is survived by her five children, Kathleen Norton and Ann Connell, both of Scranton, Richard Norton and wife Lou Ann of Omaha, Nebraska, James Norton and wife Dawn of Stanhope, N.J. and John Norton of Knolton, N.J.; six grandchildren,Brian Norton; Krystal Norton; Billy and Patrick Connell; Kathleen and Alexandra Norton; nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Bendick of N.Y.
Siblings, Sister M. Pauline Kelly, I.H.M. and Thomas Kelly; and a son-in-law, William “Bill” Connell, III also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 10:10 a.m. from the Maloney Lounge of Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in the Holy Family Chapel, to be celebrated by the Rev. E. Francis Kelly, chaplain and Frances’ cousin. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery in Scranton.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Maloney Lounge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Frances’ name to the Little Sisters of the Poor c/o Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509. Her family will forever be grateful for the care, kindness and compassion of both the Little Sisters and the entire staff of the Residence.
