Lucy Rose Salerno, L.P.N., age 96, a lifelong Old Forge resident, passed away unexpectedly Sunday at Regional Hospital of Scranton. She is survived by her beloved husband and best friend, Joseph Salerno, Sr. They were wed on September 26, 1942; the couple incredibly celebrated 76 years of marriage.
Born on April 12, 1922 and daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Reviello Festino, Lucy was a graduate of the former Taylor High School. She began a longtime career in health care after becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse upon graduation from the Hoyt School of Practical Nursing, Scranton. She worked for the former Taylor Hospital before specializing in private duty care prior to her retirement.
Of strong devotion and Roman Catholic faith, she was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Old Forge where she helped by volunteering, most notably as a baker for church bake sales. Alongside her husband, from trips to the shore to family vacations in Canada she always enjoyed traveling. She enjoyed baking and going on casino bus trips especially with the West Side Senior Citizens. She collected angel figurines and had a special fondness for guardian angels. Soft-spoken, humble and loving, she will be missed dearly by her loved ones.
She is survived by her children, Joseph Salerno, Jr. and wife Patricia of Old Forge and Vincentina (Tina) Haas and husband Gary of Taylor; two grandchildren, Karen Mochan and husband John of Old Forge and Adrienne Gutierrez and husband David of Windermere, Florida; and nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death was a granddaughter, Kimberly Haas; brothers, infant Michael and Raymond Festino, Sr.; and sisters, Josephine Madesky, Marie Corbett and Theresa Ripa.
Funeral services will begin Friday at 9:15AM from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Prince of Peace Parish, to be celebrated by Rev. August Ricciardi, Pastor. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
