Catherine Lyons, age 98 and a lifelong resident of Scranton, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon surrounded by family, the Little Sisters and staff of Holy Family Residence, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Lyons, on March 30, 1976.
Born on February 27, 1920 in the Pine Brook section of Scranton and daughter of the late Patrick and Bridget Killeen Kelly, Catherine lived in the city’s Bellevue section, better known as “God’s Country.”
A graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School where she served on the 1937 Class Reunion Committee, she was also a graduate of Lackawanna Business College. She was employed by the Goodman Family’s Anthracite News Company before working as secretary for the late Mayor Eugene Hickey and former Commissioner Joseph Corcoran.
She was a faithful member of the former Holy Cross Church, St. Patrick’s Parish, where she was also a member of the Society of Jesus, the church’s choir and past president and secretary of the Altar and Rosary Society. She also served as a judge of elections at the church.
She served as an air raid warden during WWII and was also a past secretary and auxiliary president of the West Scranton Little League in the 1960’s.
Catherine possessed all of the intagible qualities that make a special human being. She was giving, caring, had a deep love for God and her spirituality, and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She would always give of herself to others and now at peace, she will be forever missed by all.
She is survived by her loving son, Coach Jack Lyons and Frances Suchter of Scranton; daughter-in-law, Kathy Harle and husband Chick of Dunmore; son-in-law, Jack Gallagher of Annapolis, Maryland; four grandchildren, Bridget, Ellen and Kathleen Gallagher, all of Annapolis, and John Lyons of Las Vegas, Nevada; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Kathy Gallagher; and siblings, Mary Gleason and John Kelly.
Her family would like to acknowledge and thank Regional Hospital’s doctors, nurses and staff, and especially the Little Sisters of the Poor of Holy Family Residence and their entire staff for their amazing care, compassion and dedication to Catherine. Their committment to help serve others is truly unparalleled.
Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 9:40AM from the Maloney Lounge of Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Residence’s Chapel to be celebrated by Rev. E. Francis Kelly, Chaplain. Interment will follow at St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4-7:00PM in the Maloney Lounge.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Catherine’s name to the Little Sisters of the Poor c/o Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, Pa. 18509.
