Fred A. Mayes, age 98, of Middletown, Delaware and formerly of Old Forge, passed away Thursday morning at home.
Born in Old Forge on July 13, 1920, Fred was the son of the late Arthur and Pearl E. Wakelin Mayes. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII before his Honorable Discharge in 1946. He received the Good Conduct, American Theater Service and Victory Medals for his faithful service.
Prior to his retirement, he worked in building maintenance for the SUNY College of Environmental Service and Forestry, Syracuse, N.Y. He had been a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Old Forge as well as the Lawrenceville Hose Company.
He is survived by his sons, Fred Mayes and wife Linda with whom he resided and Jack Mayes and wife Charlotte of Bear, Delaware; a brother, Norman Mayes of Fort Myers, Florida; four grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Siblings, Arthur Mayes and Edna Robinson, also preceded him in death.
Funeral services by Rev. Susan Hardman-Zimmerman are scheduled for Wednesday at 1:00PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Interment with military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at Marcy Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday from noon until services at the funeral home.
