John (J.D.) Godek, age 82, of Buena Vista and a West Scranton native, passed away Monday evening at Walden’s View of North Huntingdon, after an illness. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Fran M. Woolley Godek, on January 15, 1999.
Born in Scranton on March 15, 1936, and son of the late John J. and Lottie Gora Godek, John was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1954, before attending the University of Scranton. A PFC (T) in the United States Army, he received the Good Conduct Medal to acknowledge his service to his country before his honorable discharge in 1963. A construction supervisor, he worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania before his retirement.
A longtime and faithful member of St. Patrick’s Church Parish in West Scranton, J.D. served as a Mass usher and was a member of the church’s Society of the Faithful. A loyal fan of the P.S.U. Nittany Lions, J.D. was also an avid runner. Throughout his life he was able to proudly trek on foot through every county in Pennsylvania and every state in the United States. Now at peace, he will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his daughters, Kim Styche and husband Bill of Buena Vista and Karen Godek of Hazleton; his sister, Barbara Jurnock and husband Joseph of Allentown; two grandsons, Ryan Styche and wife Kimberly and Tyler Styche; a great granddaughter, Scarlett Styche.; and nieces and nephews.
A sister, Anne McGill, also preceded him in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Saturday, November 17th, at 10:00AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial with military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday, November 16th, between 4-7:00PM at the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton.
