Jerome C. (Jerry) Stone, Sr., age 77, a longtime West Scranton resident, died Sunday morning at home. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 56 years, Shirley Royce Stone. The couple were married August 25, 1962.
Born on March 2, 1941, and raised in Throop, Jerry was the son of the late Josephine Stone Makowski. After attending West Scranton High School, he joined the Army National Guard while achieving the rank of Sergeant before his honorable discharge in 1964. With a tireless work ethic that spanned his entire life, Jerry worked for Affiliated Foods in Scranton for 33 years prior to its closure before serving as the building superintendent of Plaza 550 in Scranton for the past 22 years. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a faithful member and longtime usher at St. Patrick’s Church in West Scranton.
With a self-taught skill set Jerry was a natural “fixer”, using his talents as a carpenter, an electrician, a plumber and countless other capabilities to help anyone in need. He enjoyed dirt track racing, assembling car models and above all, keeping busy. Passing away peacefully, he will forever be missed by his dear family and friends.
He is survived by three loving children, Jerry Stone, Jr. and wife Pam of Bridgewater, N.J., Michael Stone and wife Hope of Scranton and Donna Stone of Scranton; nine grandchildren, Michael, Jr., Christopher, Joseph, Ryan, Cody, Rebecca, Nicholas, Sarah and Rachael; two great grandchildren, Bria and Ezra; siblings, Henry Makowski and wife Francis and Evelyn Goonan, all of Scranton; and many nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
