Lettie (Salerno) Marino, age 83, a lifelong resident of Old Forge, died Monday at Allied Skilled Nursing Center in Scranton, after an illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, James T. Marino, on January 19, 1988.
Born on April 6, 1935, and daughter of the late Cosmo “Gip” and Violet Moran Salerno, Lettie was a graduate of Old Forge High School. After working as a seamstress, she next displayed her legendary baking skills as the pie maker for the former Family Affair Restaurant in Taylor. She worked as the hostess for the Pittston Diner until her retirement at the age of 80 years young.
Along with baking, she was a fantastic cook who cherished preparing Sunday dinner for her family. She enjoyed going to the gym, as recently as last month, and she always adored her Friday ‘movie night’ with her friends.
Independent and strong-willed, Lettie possessed a kind, compassionate and selfless heart. Passing away peacefully, she will forever be missed by her loved ones.
She is survived by her children, James Marino and wife Jeanine of Laflin and Lettie Cox and husband Alton of Clarks Summit; her sister, Barbara Salerno of Old Forge; her grandchildren who adored “Goog”, Marissa Marino and fiance Vincent Budzyn and Matt Cox and wife Dana; great grandchildren, Vivienne and Matthew; her sister-in-law, Vera Salerno of Clarks Summit; and nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Frank “Gip” Salerno, and her beloved grandson, A.J. Cox.
Her family wishes to acknowledge and thank the entire staff of Allied Skilled Nursing Center for the care and compassion shown to both Lettie and her family throughout her stay.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 5-7:00PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge.
Memorial contributions may be made in Lettie’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN., 38105.
