Anna Garwood, of Scranton, left this Earth on September 23, 2018. She joins her family in heaven, both at peace and happy.
Born on March 8, 1927 in Binghamton, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Catherine Sowka. For many years, she worked for Lutheran Medical Hospital, Brooklyn, N.Y., as a nurses aide and unit secretary. Hardworking, conscientious, adventurous and compassionate, she made friends wherever she went. She was fiesty and spoke her mind until the end, but she always had a heart of gold. Famous for her Raggedy Ann dolls, she also loved cooking, baking, sewing and doing her word search puzzles.
Above anything, she cherished her family. Never forgetting a birthday, she always sent a card to celebrate. She will forever be missed.
She is survived by her three loving children, Micheline (Mickey) McConnon and husband Joe, Susan Bianco and husband Doug and George Garwood and fiance Rosemary; her six adored grandchildren, Paul Masterson and Lynsey, Steven Masterson and Caity, Danny Garwood and Yuka, Vienna DeGiacomo and James, Lindsey Bianco and Evan Bianco; her precious great-grandchildren, Chiara, Dominic, Nathan and Logan; her caring daughter-in-law, Ronnie; her dear friend, Rosemarie, whom she loved like a sister; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her former husband, George “Jack” Garwood; her companion, Joe Knapp; four brothers, Walter, Joseph, Steve and Harry; two sisters, Helen and Lillian; and her beloved sons, John and Sammy Garwood.
Her family would like to thank the nurses, aides and doctors at Moses Taylor Hospital’s 4th floor for giving Anna the same care, comfort and kindness she gave to her patients throughout her career.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 6:00PM at the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 3-6:00PM.
Memorial contributions may be made in Anna’s name to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Twp., Pa., 18411.
