Pauline (Mayer) Fallon, R.N., age 95, of South Scranton, passed away Thursday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Fallon, Sr., on August 3, 1995.
A lifelong Scranton resident, she was the daughter of the late Robert J. and Mary T. McLaughlin Mayer. A graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School, Pauline was also a graduate of Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing. Her career as a Registered Nurse spanned four decades, beginning at the West Side Hospital, West Scranton. She was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1946 after achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant while proudly serving as a general nurse during WWII. She was later awarded the WWII Victory Medal for her service.
She married, began her family and eventually raised nine adoring children. Returning to Scranton State General Hospital, she worked as an R.N. from 1960 until her retirement as the hospital’s Nursing Supervisor in 1988.
An active member of the community, Pauline was a founding board member of the NEPA Transplant Association, a member of the Pennsylvania Nurses’ Association (PNA) and a member of the Scranton State Hospital’s Alumni Association, passing away as the group’s eldest member. Her dedication to the community was proclaimed by the former mayor of Scranton when he declared March 15, 2002, as “Pauline Fallon Day.”
She played a vital role in the faith and lives of her family. She was very involved in each of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities, supporting each and every one of their endeavors. A pillar of St. John Neumann’s Church Community, she was a faithful and devoted member of the parish. She was a longtime member of the church’s Altar and Rosary Society and the Renew Group. Loved by all who knew her, her legacy will long live on through the three generations she leaves behind.
She is survived by seven of her nine children: Robert F. Fallon, Jr. of Rosemont, PA, John (Jack) Fallon and wife JoAnne of Scranton, Michael X. Fallon and wife Teresa of Scranton, Joseph G. Fallon and wife Maxine of Hope Mills, NC, Thomas M. Fallon of Arlington, MA, Mary Jo Loftus and husband James of Scranton and Erin Fallon and partner Lori Griffith of Wenonah, NJ and sisters, Eileen Bowen of Scranton and Eleanor Anderson of Bethlehem, PA; 18 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Also preceding her in death were two beloved sons, Timothy and Paul Fallon; and siblings, Robert, John and Donald Mayer, Peggy Farrell, Alice Jean Gilgallon and Madelyn (Madge) Purcell.
The Fallon family would like to acknowledge Allied Home Health, especially caregivers Dolores, Amanda and Joann for their amazing care, compassion and kindness.
Funeral services will begin on Tuesday at 9:00AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of Our Lord Church, St. John Neumann Parish, 633 Orchard Street in Scranton, to be concelebrated by Rev. Michael Bryant, Pastor; Rev. J., Duane Gavitt, Presider; and Msgr. Joseph G. Quinn, Homilist; with Liturgy sung by Pauline’s son, Thomas. Burial with full military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 4-8:00PM at the funeral home with an 8:00PM wake service by Rev. Ryan Glenn, Parochial Vicar at her parish.
