Edward J. Grabowski, 100 years young, of Newark, New York, and formerly a longtime resident of West Scranton, passed away Wednesday. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Betty Lou Brooksher Grabowski, on September 22, 1992.
Born in Taylor on June 5, 1918, Edward was the son of the late Anthony and Catherine Frystak Grabowski. A graduate of the former Taylor High School, Class of 1938, he proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII before being honorably discharged.
Spanning more than 50 years, he began his loyal and dedicated career with The Scranton Times as a paperboy. He then worked in deliveries, management of circulation and eventually sales and promotion, before his retirement from the local newspaper. He was also a founding member of The Scranton Times’ Credit Union.
Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a longtime devoted member of St. Patrick’s Parish, as well as a member of the church’s Altar and Rosary Society, a lector and a server. He stayed very active well into his retirement, managing the Downtown Athletic Club and regularly playing racquetball and golf. At Pine Hills Golf Course in Taylor, he was a course regular until moving from the area at age 91. It was at the former Hank Evanish Athletic Club in Scranton where Edward spent much of his time, playing racquetball into his 80’s while continually working out there until nearly 90.
A loving father, “pop pop” and great “pop pop”, he will forever be missed.
He is survived by his three daughters, Jean Wysocki and husband Alexander of Chadds Ford, Pa., Gayle Addyman and husband John and Lynne Poiesz and husband Daniel, all of Newark, New York; five grandchildren, Amy Loblaw (Chad), Michael Addyman, Elisabeth Bentley (Jeff), Mary Kate Addyman, and Sarah Poiesz; three great grandchildren, Lucie and Jeremy Loblaw and Jaden Bentley, and many nieces and nephews.
Also preceding him in death were siblings, Walter, Henry and Stanley Grabowski, Sophie Golka and Lottie Hunter.
