Henry (Hank) “Hunter” Zurek, 83, of the Greenwood section of Moosic, died Wednesday evening at home after an illness. He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife, Dolores Serafinski Zurek. Wed on May 20, 1961, the couple recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Born on July 8, 1935, raised in Coxton and son of the late Stanley and Anna Kluck Zurek, Hank was a graduate of Dupont High School, class of 1954. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served during the Korean War. While stationed in Korea, he patrolled the dangerous border (DMZ) between North and South Korea before returning home to an honorable discharge in 1957.
Upon returning, he met his soulmate, Dolores, and together they raised three daughters. He was employed by Alco Aluminum before eventually working at the Tobyhanna Army Depot for more than 25 years before his retirement.
An active member of the Moosic Lions Club 6085 for nearly four decades, Hank served the organization in every way and at every position including president. A former member of St. Mary Czestochowa Church in Greenwood before its closure, he served as usher, church function cook and had an active role in all fundraisers. Deeply involved in the Moosic community, he participated in countless capacities and was also a member of the Lackawanna County Democratic Committee.
He enjoyed fishing and was an avid hunter, spending much time in the Pennsylvania woods he so greatly adored. A good man with a big heart, Hank touched the lives of many and will be forever missed.
He is also survived by his daughters, Marlene Oliver and husband, John, Peachtree City, Ga.; Donna Nannini, Duryea; and Renee Merrill and husband, Roy, Hidden Valley Lake, Calif.; seven grandchildren; four siblings, Stanley Zurek and wife, Irene, Suscon; Chester Zurek and wife, Eileen, Middletown, N.J.; Helen Pitz and husband, Gene, Riverside, Calif.; and Mary Kaub and husband, William, Throop; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by siblings, Stella Vajda, Edward, Robert and John Zurek, Joseph, Frank and Anthony Twardowski.
His family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Paul Remick for years of friendship and care as well as the staff of Traditional Home Hospice for their amazing help and comfort during this difficult time.
