William F. Hughes, Sr., age 95, of Old Forge, passed away Saturday morning at the V.A. Medical Center in Wilkes Barre. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna Mae Belles Hughes. Wed on May 8, 1971, the couple recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.
Born in Old Forge on June 22, 1922, William was the son of the late Evan and Mabel Carey Hughes. Educated in Old Forge Schools, he then proudly served in the United States Army during WWII. For his outstanding service to his country, he was awarded The Silver Star, The Good Conduct, The American Campaign, and The Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medals; The Philippines Liberation Ribbon; and, with highest honor, The Purple Heart Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, before his Honorable Discharge on November 22, 1945. Prior to his retirement he worked as an operator for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. Locally, he was a longtime member of the Moosic Alliance Community Church.
An outdoorsman who liked to go fishing and hunting, he always enjoyed time spent at his cabin in Blakeslee. Also a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Allentown, William leaves behind a loving wife, adoring son and dear family and friends who will carry on his memory.
He is survived by his loving son, William Hughes, Jr. and wife Sharon of Easton; his brother, Ron Hughes of Nazareth; two grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Siblings, Dorothy Goodyear, Betty Strausser, Jack, Edward, Ted, George and Robert Hughes also preceded him in death.
His family would like to thank the entire staff of Wilkes Barre’s V.A. Medical Center for the tremendous care and compassion shown to both William and his family throughout his stay.
Funeral services and military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard are scheduled for Tuesday at noon in the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge. Relatives and friends may pay their respects from 10:00AM until noon at the funeral home. Burial will be on Wednesday at noon at Northampton Memorial Shrine Cemetery, 3051 Green Pond Road, Easton, Pa., 18045.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in William’s name to the American Cancer Society c/o 712 South Keyser Avenue, Taylor, 18517.
