Obituaries

Thomas McCormack, age 92, a lifelong Scranton resident, passed away Tuesday morning at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scranton, where he had recently resided. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Miller McCormack. The couple had celebrated 65 years of marriage prior to her death on March 6, 2016.

Born on September 4, 1925, he was raised in South Scranton to parents, Alice and Thomas McCormack. A graduate of the former Central Scranton High School, he then proudly served his country in the Army Air Force during WWII as a machine gunner and radio operator of the Boeing B-17. For his brave service, he was awarded the American Campaign, European African Middle Eastern Campaign, Good Conduct, World War II Victory and the Air Medals before his honorable discharge in 1946.

A photo engraver by trade, he worked at The Scranton Times where he was honored as a member of the “50 Year Club.” In 1975, he began Scranton Engraving where he served as owner and operator until his retirement. A member of the Graphic Arts International Union, he formerly served as local chapter president.

A longtime golfer, Thomas was a member of the Elmhurst Country Club, and he was a passionate fan of Penn State Nittany Lion’s football. A devoted Roman Catholic, he was also a member of St. Patrick’s Church Parish in West Scranton. He had a tremendous work ethic and nothing brought him more happiness than his grandchildren. Now at peace, he’ll be forever missed by his loved ones.

He is survived by his five children, Thomas McCormack, Jr., Kathleen McCormack, Jim McCormack and wife Amy, Maryellen McCormack and Caroline DeNinno and husband Nick, all of Scranton; three grandchildren, Corinne and Megan DeNinno and Cpl. Jimmy McCormack; a brother, Leo McCormack of Scranton; and nieces and nephews.

Sons, Michael and John McCormack and a brother, Robert McCormack, also preceded him in death.
His family wishes to thank the entire staff of Linwood Nursing Center for their years of care, compassion and kindness.

Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Friday at 9:15AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 10:00AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, 1608 Oram Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Burial with full military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
