John Buchan, age 68, of Duryea, passed away Monday morning at home after a longtime battle with illness. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia Gleason Buchan. Wed on September 29, 1973, the couple would have celebrated their 45th anniverary this year.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on May 29, 1950, John was a graduate of Dickinson High School before being drafted into the Vietnam War where he proudly served in the U.S. Army before his honorable discharge from service in 1971. He then settled in the area where he married and raised his family. A lifelong truck driver, he hauled freight for several companies before retiring as a U.S. Mail Transporter for Nicholas Trucking Company, Inc.
A lifetime member of the American Legion, he was also an active member of both the V.F.W. Post #8335 and the West Side Social Club, both of Avoca. He also honored his fallen comrades as a member of the Military Honor Guard.
He had an amazing work ethic and a huge heart, always willing to go out of his way for anyone. He adored his family, especially his grandchildren, and he’ll certainly be missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Michelle Gosau and husband Jan-Michael of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kelly Johnson and husband Roger, Jr. of Duryea and James Buchan of Duryea; his siblings, Douglas, Edward, Thomas, Joseph, Patricia and Mary Buchan, James Brown and Bonnie Gibbson; his four grandchildren, Roger, III and Starr Johnson and John-Michael and Erin Gosau; Davina Krappa, who John considered a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will begin on Saturday at 1:00PM at the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with burial and full military rites by the AMVETS Honor Guard to follow at Marcy Cemetery in Duryea. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Saturday from 11:00AM until services at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s name to the AMVETS, care of Gerard Gurnari, 111 Lidy Road, Dupont, Pa., 18641.
