Herbert J. Smith, 67, of Scranton, died Saturday at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after an illness. His wife of 48 years is the former Veronica Grill.
Born in Scranton, son of the late Harry and Mary Burnett Smith, Herb was a self-employed plumber for more than 30 years and most recently worked at SLHDA as a heating supervisor before retirement.
He could fix anything around the house and would help anyone that he could. He loved to cook, especially Sunday dinners with his family, and he made the best meatballs and sauce in the world. His legacy of kindness and selflessness will continue to live on not only through his family but also through those benefitting from the donation of his corneas through SightLife.
The family would like to thank his sister-in-law, Jean DeMarco, for all of her love and support, especially over the last several months of Herb’s illness.
The family would also like to thank Dr. Prashanth Vallabhajosyula and the staff at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania for their knowledge and direct care.
Also surviving are five daughters, Lori Santarsiero and husband, Bob, of Moosic; Paula Barchak and husband, Nick, of Dunmore; Brenda Carpenter and husband, Jim, of Scranton; Connie Jones and husband, Adam, of Madison Twp.; and Crystal Sobolewski and fiancé, Rich Entrot, of Clarks Summit; a son, Herbert Jr., Scranton; 11 grandchildren, Sierra and R.J. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Shirley; a brother, Walter “Tommy”; and a grandson, Ryan Barchak.
