Paul J. Cusick, age 75, of West Scranton, died Wednesday morning at home. His wife, Rosalind C. Kennedy Cusick, died September 2, 2002.
Born in Scranton on August 24, 1929 he was the son of the late Patrick and Mary Kane Cusick. He was a 1947 graduate of the West Scranton High School where he was the first quarterback of the football team. He attended the University of Scranton. He served in the Army during Korean War where he received the Army of Occupation Medal of Germany. Before his retirement in 1995 he served as the Executive Director for the Scranton Housing Authority for 27 years. He was appointed to that position by the former Mayor James J. Walsh. After that position, he co-founded, with the late Charles J. Volpe, the Housing and Redevelopment Insurance Exchange where he served as Chief Executive Officer until 2003.He was a member of the Lackawanna County Charter Study Commission where he was top vote getter. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, West Scranton and a member of the church’s Society of The Faithful. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Lackawanna County. He was a member of the Country Club of Scranton and a former board member of St. Joseph’s Center in Scranton. He was the former chairman of the Scranton Redevelopment Authority and past president of the Pennsylvania Housing & Redevelopment Association. He was always active in local politics.
He was a compassionate, generous man who enjoyed the company and comfort of his family and friends. He was an avid Penn State Fan. His work reflected his sincere efforts on behalf of others, especially the less fortunate. His Irish wit brightened the lives of all he met. He was a source of strength to his family and friends.
He is survived by his two sons, Patrick Cusick and his wife Julianne of Lititz, Pa. and John Cusick and his wife Kathleen of Wilmington, Del. A daughter, Kathleen Buzad and her husband Charles of Scranton.
One brother, John P. Cusick of Buffalo, N.Y.One sister, Marian Naso of Scranton. Four granddaughters , Maura Buzad, Maria, Krysta, and Kaitlin Cusick and three grandsons, Peter, Paul, and Patrick Cusick and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. William F. Cusick and Joseph Higgins and a sister Anne Cusick.
Mass of the Christian burial will be concelebrated on Friday at 11:00 A.M. in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Jackson Street in West Scranton by Msgr. David L. Tressler, Pastor, the Rev. Philip S. Rayappan, Associate Pastor and the Rev. William B. Healey, Pastor of the Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Hawley, Pa. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the mass. Entombment will be in the Cathedral Cemetery Mausoleum in Scranton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Poor C/O 400 Olive Street Scranton, Pa. 18509.
