Carl G. Royce, age 70, of West Scranton, passed away Sunday evening at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, after a longtime illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Bout Royce, on June 28, 1995.
Born in Scranton on November 15, 1947, and son of the late Carl G. and Jean Genevieve Sarafinko Royce, Carl was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Class of 1965. Upon graduation, he proudly served in the United States Air Force for four years prior to his honorable discharge as a sergeant in 1968. After living in both California and Texas, he returned to the area working for Gentex Corporation in Carbondale for many years before illness. He last worked for Scranton’s 550 Plaza in charge of maintenance and security. Of Roman Catholic faith, he regularly attended Mass at St. Lucy’s Parish.
Carl was an avid golfer, playing everywhere on the local circuit, including at countless tournaments. He was also a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a collector of everything from beer steins to model ships, and he was sure to never miss an episode of his favorite shows, “The Walking Dead” or “Suits.” Adored by all who knew him, Carl will forever be remember for his dry humor, his love for his daughters and grandchildren, and being a great family man and friend. Now at peace, he will always be missed.
He is survived by three loving daughters, Kara Royce and Alyssa Royce and Christa Merritt, all of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Justin, Lenny, Brandon, Jasmine, Jaelah, Wyatt and Wynter; a great granddaughter, Juliana; and nine siblings, Shirley Stone and husband Jerry, Rachel Tobin, Sylvia Layland, Donald Royce and wife Donna, all of Scranton, Ellie Richmond and husband Dale and Larry Royce and wife Joann, all of Clarks Summit, Paul Royce and wife Enola of Pocono Pines, Charles Royce and Adrian Royce, both of Scranton; and many nieces and nephews.
A brother, Walter Royce, and an infant sister, Rosemary, also preceded him in death.
His family would like to thank both Dr. Nicholas Chiumento as well as the entire staff of Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center’s Henry Cancer Hospital for the collective compassion and care given to Carl throughout his illness. It will never be forgotten.
Funeral services are sscheduled to begin on Friday at 11:00AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a noon Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton Street, West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Sam J. Ferretti, Pastor. Burial with full military honors by the AMVETS Honor Guard will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Thursday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
