Martin (Marty) Boyer, 57, of Clarks Summit, died Saturday under the care of Allied Services Hospice Unit after a courageous bout with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Ellen Bauman Boyer. Wed on July 12, 1986, the couple was married for 31 years.
Born in Clarion on Sept. 24, 1960, son of Robert and Mary Carroll Boyer of Kane, Marty was a graduate of Kane High School. A graduate of Lock Haven University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, he was also a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE) Fraternity where he created countless lifetime friendships. For more than 35 years, he worked for the Pa. American Water Co., where he served as treatment plant operator before his illness. He was a member of the Church of St. Gregory, Clarks Green.
A lifelong sports fan, Marty coached junior high school wrestling for Abington Heights for 22 years. For just as long, he served as a PIAA referee for wrestling and football and he was recognized, awarded and admired for his years of service to high school athletics. His colleagues will long remember him for his knowledge, integrity and class, and he was rewarded for his talents on the field by officiating the 2011, 2012 and 2013 PIAA state wrestling championships and a 2015 PIAA state football championship game.
He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend whose legacy will forever live on.
He is also survived by his adoring daughters, Rachel and Kelly Boyer, both of Clarks Summit; siblings, Robert Boyer and wife, Robynn; and Daniel Boyer and wife, Julie, all of Kane; and Kimberly Boyer, Warwick, R.I.; nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Patricia Bauman Lichty and husband Tom of York; and his four-legged buddy, Pipa.
His family would like to collectively thank the entire staffs of Allied Hospice, Regional Hospital’s ninth floor, NROC, along with Drs. Glen Digwood, Thomas Hopkins, Jeffrey Gryn and Jennifer Pierce, for the genuine care, compassion and efforts throughout Marty’s illness. His family would like to especially acknowledge the entire community for their outpouring of support and love during this difficult time. It’ll never be forgotten.
The funeral will be Saturday at 9 a.m. from the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in the Church of St. Gregory, 330 N. Abington Road, Clarks Green, to be celebrated by the Rev. John M. Lapera, pastor.

Box 46, Point Pleasant, PA 18950; or the PIAA Foundation, 550 Gettysburg Road, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055. Visit the funeral home website for directions or to leave an online condolence.
