Joseph Costello, age 61, of Throop, passed away Friday morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, after a sudden illness. He is survived by his childhood sweetheart, best friend and beloved wife, Sharon Bohn Costello. Wed on September 15, 1979, the couple were married 38 years.
Born in Scranton on November 26, 1956, and son of Sally Costello Galea of Olyphant and the late Armand Galea, Joe was a graduate of Mid Valley High School, Class of 1974. For nearly 30 years he served as the lead finisher for Casket Shells, Inc., of Eynon, before working for Square Tool & Dye Corporation of Throop prior to his unexpected death. Of Roman Catholic faith, he was a faithful member of Holy Cross Parish in Olyphant.
Joe had an amazing knack for fixing things. He was the ultimate handyman, having a solution for all problems from mechanical to automotive. Selfless, he would help anyone in need, never turning anyone away. He also wouldn’t pass up a good slot machine, as he always loved his trips to the casino.
The rock of his family, he was a devoted husband, father, son, grandfather, brother and uncle, who will forever be missed by all who knew him.
He is also survived by his adoring daughter, Kelly Costello Thubbron and husband John of Throop; the light of his life, granddaughter Raelynne Thubbron, who will dearly miss her P-Pop; loving siblings, Anthony (Tony) Galea and wife Cheri of Scott Twp., twin sisters, Denise Kester and husband Randy of Archbald and Renee Corgan and husband Cy of Duryea and Frank Galea and wife Rosilyn of Dickson City; and many nieces and nephews.
Three infant children; and a brother, Armand Galea, Jr. also preceded him in death.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Thursday at 8:30AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton, with a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Parish, Delaware Avenue in Olyphant, to be celebrated by Rev. Michael Delaney, Pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Wednesday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
