Betty Ann Sweeney Mulholland, age 87, formerly of West Scranton, passed away Monday at The Meadows at Scranton, after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 55 years, Edward J. Mulholland, on April 26, 2008.
Born in Scranton on August 16, 1930, and daughter of the late Frank J. Sweeney and Florence Howarth Sweeney Tobin, she was a graduate of the former St. Patrick’s High School in West Scranton. Along with her raising her loving family, she worked for Triple A Trouser, St. Patrick’s Church Rectory and Skittino’s Market, all of Scranton, prior to her retirement.
Of Roman Catholic faith, she was also a devoted lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Church Parish. An amazing wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend, she will forever be remembered for her kind heart and generosity.
She is survived by her children, Edward A. Mulholland and wife Lisa of Clarks Summit and Kevin M. Mulholland and wife JoAnne M. Brady of Scranton, Mary C. Namlick Major of Old Forge, Ann T. Levandoski and husband Martin of Scranton and Susan Mulholland and companion Robert Hartman of Taylor; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Marie Jackson and husband Anthony, Sean K. Namlick, Tara A. Schuster and husband Thomas, Ashley A. Levandoski and fiance Justin Schumacher, Christine E. Major, John E. Mulholland and Margo E. Mulholland; seven great grandchildren, Nicholas A., Ryan P. and Riley C. Jackson, Ethan E. and Quinn C. Namlick, Olivia June Schumacher and Thomas M. Schuster; brothers-in-law, John Mulholland and wife Ann, Norman Mulholland and Patrick (Gary) Mulholland; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Williams; and many nieces and nephews.
The last surviving of eleven, Betty was also preceded in death by her siblings; Frank, Robert, Eugene, Paul, Lawrence and Thomas Sweeney, Emaline Imbriglia, Theresa Williams, Mary Hashem and Ann Hill; step-siblings, Loretta Dailey, Florence Yatsun and John Tobin, Jr.; brothers-in-law, Kenneth and Thomas (Moe) Mulholland; and a sister-in-law, Maureen Mulholland.
Her family would like to acknowledge all of Betty’s caregivers throughout her illness for their collective care and compassion.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Friday at 10:00AM at St. Patrick’s Church, 1403 Jackson Street in West Scranton, to be celebrated by Rev. Richard Fox, Pastor. Interment will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 9-10:00AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s name to the Alzheimer’s Association: Greater Pennsylvania Chapter – Wilkes-Barre Office, 57 N Franklin St, Wilkes-Barre, PA., 18701.
