Sophie (Sue) Puchalski, age 98, formerly of West Scranton, died Saturday at Riverside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Taylor, where she resided. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph W. Puchalski, in 1990.
Born in South Scranton on February 28, 1919, and daughter of the late John and Martha Zielazinski Kowalski, Sophie was educated in Scranton Schools. Of strong Roman Catholic faith, she was a devoted member of St. Ann’s Basilica Parish for many years. Also a member of the Polish Women’s Alliance, she enjoyed traveling, especially taking trips to Florida to visit her sister Evelyn, prior to her passing.
Above all was her family. She was a loving mother, “Grandma Sue” and “Great Grandmother Sue,” who was so proud of each of them. Passing away peacefully Saturday morning, Sophie will forever be missed by her loved ones.
She is survived by her loving son, Vincent R. Puchalski and wife Mary Ann of Taylor; two adoring grandchildren, Vincent A. Puchalski and wife Renee of Taylor and Shawn M. Roguskie and husband Charles of Dupont; great grandchildren, Ashley Puchalski of Pittsburgh, Mallory and Kyle Puchalski, both of Taylor, and Jacob Roguskie of Dupont; and nieces and nephews.
Her sister, Evelyn Yablonski, also preceded her in death.
Her family wishes to offer their sincerest gratitude to the entire staff of Riverside Center for eight years of exceptional care given to Sophie throughout her stay. They’ll be forever grateful.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Tuesday at 10:00AM at Saint Ann’s Basilica, 1250 St. Ann Street in Scranton. Interment will follow at SS. Peter and Paul Parish Cemetery, West Scranton.
Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Sophie’s name to St. Ann’s Basilica Parish, c/o 1233 St. Ann St., Scranton, Pa., 18504.
Arrangements are under the care of the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street in Old Forge.
