Sophie B. Kurpiewski Chwasciewski, 93, of Old Forge, passed into the arms of the Lord on January 16, 2018, surrounded by her loved ones. Sophie was born in Old Forge, PA., August 10, 1924, the daughter of the late Josef and Mary Anna Zuzga Kurpiewski. She was one of ten children born to Polish immigrants and the last surviving sibling. She was a child of the Great Depression with a “can do” attitude, appreciating what she had and working for what was needed, especially after losing her father in a coal mine accident when she was fourteen.
Before retirement Sophie was employed by the garment industry working at Duchess Factory, B & G, and Rohr Lingerie.
She enjoyed bus trips to Atlantic City, Sonic hot dogs, music from polkas to contemporary bands and reading the celebrity gossip magazines. She was fondly nicknamed “Bubbles” as a child by her brother for always chewing gum. Sophie had a deep religious belief praying the rosary every day and attending church when able to do so. She was member of St. Michael’s Church, Immaculate Conception Church and later St. Joseph at Divine Mercy Parrish.
Sophie was preceded in death by her husband Stanley and two sons Thomas and Stanley Chwasciewski; four brothers, Thomas, John, Joseph and William Kurpiewski; and five sisters, Genevieve Greenfield, Josephine Baclaski, Theresa Orzolek, Anastasia Orzolek and Lenore Orzolek.
She is survived by daughter Theodora Chwasciewski and companion Dave Green, grandchildren Tiffany and husband Mark Ciocca, Ian, Sasha, Christine and Theresa Chwasciewski, Peter and Stephanie Lyckowski, and Joseph Bergamino; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Dr. Robert Kaville, Dr. Scott Rieder, Geisinger Mountain View Care Center Staff @ Bella Bay, Hospice of the Sacred Heart and her caregiver for many years and whom she resided with for the past four years Tiffany Ciocca. A private family blessing service by Rev. Francis Pauselli was held at Kearney Funeral Home, Old Forge and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Old Forge.
