Marie Schommer, age 86 and a former resident of Jackson Heights Apartments in West Scranton, passed away Friday evening at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, following an illness. Her beloved husband, Robert Schommer, preceded her in death in 1992.
Born in Scranton on August 24, 1931, and the daughter of the late Thomas and Catherine Reggall Kelly, Marie was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1950. A talented seamstress, she worked in the drapery department of the former Globe Store in downton Scranton for over four decades, prior to her retirement. A devoted Roman Catholic, she was a faithful member of St. Lucy’s Parish in West Scranton.
Marie enjoyed playing bingo, especially with her girlfriends from Jackson Heights, and she also liked building puzzles as a hobby. A lifelong caregiver with an amazing heart, she was the caretaker for both her husband as well as her sisters during each of their own illnesses. She then volunteered as an aide to the residents at The Jewish Home of Eastern Pennsylvania. Selfless, thoughtful and loving, Marie will be forever missed by her family and friends.
She is survived by her three adoring nephews, Gary Zellers and wife Eileen of Scranton, James Zellers of Dunmore and Charlie Cardamone and wife Rose of Scranton; and great nieces and great nephews.
Three sisters, Catherine Zellers, Theresa Ellen Cardamone and Helene Hueg, also preceded her in death.
Her family would like to thank the entire staff of M.T.H.’s Intensive Care Unit for their tremendous efforts, while giving Marie both hope and comfort in her final days.
Funeral services are scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 8:45AM from the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue in Scranton, with a 9:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Lucy’s Church, 949 Scranton Street, in West Scranton. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park in Elmhurst Twp. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Monday between 4-7:00PM at the funeral home.
