Mary Evans Salamida, 85, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 5, at Geisinger Mountain View Care Center after a long illness. She was a devoted wife to the late Martin R. Salamida, to whom she was married for 63 years.
Her strength of character and loving nature will be an enduring example to her surviving four children, Susan Salamida Henderson, Binghamton, N.Y.; John Salamida, Carbondale, Colo.; Lori Salamida, Philadelphia, Pa.; and Chris Salamida, Pittsburgh, Pa.; and seven grandchildren. Mary has a surviving sister, Dorothy McGroarty, of Spring Brook Twp., Pa. Other siblings who preceded her in death were Joan Getz, John Evans, Carol Rose and Carol Young.
Born in Old Forge, the daughter of the late William and Tibatha Evans, she was a lifelong member of the First Welsh Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, a devoted Sunday school teacher and a friend to many. She was a professional interior decorator, a seamstress at Scranton’s top boutiques and bridal shops, and a talented gourmet cook. She also lent her beautiful voice to many choirs and Gymmanfa Ganus (Welsh “Singing Festivals”); and was a sought-after soloist throughout the Lackawanna Valley.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. in the United Baptist Church, 213 S. Main Ave., Scranton, to be conducted by the Rev. Paul Fields, pastor. Interment will follow at Dunmore Cemetery.
