Mary “Marie” Elizabeth Chaiko Clifford, 96, formerly of Moosic, died Sunday at St. John Speciality Care Center, Mars. She was the widow of Robert J. Clifford, who died in 1999.
Born in Moosic, daughter of the late John and Mary Suppy Chaiko, she was a graduate of Moosic High School, (The Old School), where she starred on the basketball team. She was a active member of Saint Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Old Forge, where she would annual decorate over 25 dozen ornate pysanki Easter eggs for parishioners. She was previously employed by E. I. Dupont de Nemours and Co. (the Powder Mill) in Moosic, Bell Telephone Co., and Diamond State Telephone, Delaware. She lived in Claymont, DE and Madison, NJ before returning to Moosic. Mary had a lifelong devotion to Moosic. She loved ice skating at Rocky Glen Park and tending to her family home, including the flowers, lawn, and shrubs.
Surviving are a son: Robert George Clifford and wife Barbara Lomb Clifford, Allison Park; a granddaughter: Allison Clifford, a grandson: Robert Patrick Clifford; a brother: Charles Chaiko, Old Forge; a sister: Anna Morrill, Sylva, NC; a sister-in-law: Ann Chaiko, Duryea ; a niece: Eleanore Meals; a nephew: Joseph Chaiko; grand nieces: Kim Jones, Christine Jones, and Nicole Chaiko; and grand nephews: Joseph Chaiko and James Meals.
She was also preceded in death by four brothers: Michael; George, who was killed in action in WWII; John, and Joseph.
The funeral will be Saturday at 9:30 am from the Thomas P. Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 517 North Main Street, Old Forge, with Divine Liturgy at 10 am in Saint Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Church St., Old Forge, to be celebrated by the Rev. Eduard Shestak. Interment, Saint Nicholas Byzantine Cemetery, Old Forge. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 pm at the funeral home.
