Donald John Sweeney, 55, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Sunday morning at Geisinger Community Medical Center after a sudden illness.
Born on August 20, 1961, son of the late John J., Jr. and Alice Coyle Sweeney, Donny was a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1979. After working for Santana Products and Laminations, Inc., he most recently worked as the maintence supervisor for the Sleep Inn and Suites of Dunmore. A baseball fanatic, Donny loved the Philadelphia Phillies. From playing baseball himself to coaching his daughters’ softball teams to playing with his sons, he absolutely loved the game. An outdoorsman, he was also an avid camper and fisherman. Donny had a heart of gold, eager and willing to help anyone in need, he would give you the shirt off his back. In his final selfless act, he will continue his legacy through the lives of the many people he will save through the Gift of Life Program. He’ll be forever missed by his countless friends and family members.
He is survived by his four children, Jeremy Swartz and girlfriend Devin Friedman of Pittston, Jillian Hetsko-Sweeney and Jeanae Sweeney, both of New York, N.Y., and Jordan Sweeney of Bethlehem; his granddaughter, Evelyn Swartz; his siblings, Paul, Robert and Thomas Sweeney, all of Scranton, and Jay Sweeney of Dunmore, Mary Anne Gordon of Moosic, Kathleen Casey of Tunkhannock, Patricia and Ruth Marie Williams and Eileen Sweeney, all of Scranton; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his former wife and friend, Carol Sweeney of Dunmore. As well as his friend Lori of Scranton.
His brother, John J. Sweeney, III, also preceded him in death.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 6:00PM at the Kearney Funeral Home, Inc., 125 North Main Avenue, Scranton. Relatives and friends may pay their respects on Friday between 4-6:00PM at the funeral home.
